2012 marketing review!

by Kurt on December 21, 2012

Time to wrap up the year…

I guess the greatest phenomenon of the past year was Gangnam Style. If this is the first time you hear about this, you’ve been living in a cave. PSY just today crossed 1bn views on Youtube. One billion! I mean… makes me speechless. Created with Youtube in mind, and deliberately free to use, it led to spin-offs, spoofs, merchandising, and fame -PSY went from being nothing to being a world-class brand. That, my friends, is kick-ass marketing!

Second big thing is the rise of Instagram. My God, I see Instagram all over the place all of a sudden. And I’m actually hooked on it myself lately. Don’t know why, but it seems there is something to it. Intuitively nice to use. Cooler than pinterest. Easier than facebook. Smart move of Mister Zuckerberg to buy them (for $1bn, over a beer in the weekend apparently –guess that’s what you do when you’re the worlds’ youngest billionaire).

Third noteworthy one -and one that changed my perception of corporate advertising- was P&G showing its soul. If you are a parent and don’t cry when you see the “I love you Mum” commercial, then you have an issue with your emotions. The power and trust  in the brands and company that comes with  that approach –wow! Not the first time they did it, but first time they did it so big, so well. And it caught on like wildfire. To the point where the tv commercial was being sent around just to thank mums (guess what, I did the same). That’s way beyond pure brand advertising. That’s about emotions and feelings. Strong stuff.

I’ve put this, as well as some other noteworthy marketing phenomena in the presentation below:

And here is, selected by the Grand Jury (read: me), the ultimate dance song of 2012 [couldn’t leave this out, being a huge BRUNO MARS fan]:

How can I forgot Felix, jumping from outer space, 39 kilometres above Roswell, New Mexico. What an awesome awesome marketing event. And what a spectacularly brilliant move from RED BULL -they supposidely came up with the risky stunt. And then they went all out, invested money and people into it, creating the stratos team, building a whole 360 integrated event around it, what not. In sum: they made it ‘bigger than life’ and it was … just fantastic! Marketing at its best. Experience branding to the max. Kudos to one of my competitors! Really. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/retailandconsumer/leisure/9610119/Red-Bulls-space-jump-stunt-with-Felix-Baumgartner-worth-100m-in-ad-spend.html
