Chicken Soup for the real Marketing Soul !

Swearing is good!

Who the f#@!# cares about operational issues a company has? The consumer sure doesn’t. Talk consumer. Always. Work systems to get the maximum consumer experience out the door! Everything else is meaningless: no great consumer experience = no repeat = no sales = no operation = no nothing. Marketing rules. Hell yeah!

Think! About marketing, that is.

Things are changing in case you haven’t noticed. If it’s been a few weeks since you’ve analyzed WTF is the deal with Pinterest, Friendster, transmedia, Foursquare, astroturfing guerilla marketing, content creation, hi5, Google Ads, Habbo, tweet buffering, Netlog, …then maybe your interest levels aren’t what they should be. Just saying. Take your ipad everywhere, install that Flipboard app, and read…blogs, tweets, magazines, books, whatever. Think MORE about marketing!

Experiment. Try.

Just DO, something! Marketers don’t have textbook approaches. Many books written, yes, but there are NO right answers. Data has flaws. You’ll only know what reality brings when you are two feet deep! Test, keep what’s good, throw what’s bad. Move on and test some more.

Have F-U-N. Contagious fun.

Marketing people have to be up-beat, joyful, pumping, burning the midnight oil. Not just because marketing is a creative field, but because as a marketer you are responsible for bringing FUN to your consumers, in whatever shape or form. Don’t get caught up in the corporate mumbo-jumbo, esp in the first 10 years of your marketing career (after that, you’ll have to give in to that –sorry)

Passion is everything!

Show your passion for marketing. Have it spill over to other people, other departments. Makes your days so much more enjoyable, and hey, it’s a career booster.

Find that magic zone

It’s probably far away from your comfort zone! OMG, really? Yep! Boldly go where no man has ever gone before!

You ARE the man! (woman ~ also good)

Marketing is the driving force of most companies. Yes, at the face of it sales and finance are critical. But without marketing, no brands, no innovation, no consumer insights! A company without marketing is an empty shell. Like I said: you ARE the man!!

All of the above equals:

ENJOY! Kurt
