BRING OUT THAT PASSION

by Kurt on September 30, 2011

You’re in marketing. So where’s the passion?

The ultimate killer for a young marketer is to come across as a conformist, an average “business guy”. Yeah, I know, once you’re 20+ years in the job, you’ll “have” to do and be that. But (at least) the first 10 years of your marketing career you have to BREATHE your brand, you have to excite and challenge the company, you need to be heard!

You have to SING and DANCE around every aspect of your brand activities whether a new pack design, a new website, a conversation the brand started, a product launch. Louder than ever. Louder than others.

Why? You own the brand. It should be in your veins. As an effect, you’ll pump up your environment, energize it, and create enthusiasm for your work. On a personal level, you’ll be noticed and talked about as the guy/girl going out of his/her way to live the brand, to be the brand…and ultimately to build and grow the brand. A win-win for you and the business.

What? You have to believe! Your brand is THE brand. And you ARE the brand. Know its every aspect, mirror the targetgroups’ habits and life. Find the good, the bad, the ugly.

What not? Just jumping around without cause is of course not what I’m talking about. Create reasons to demonstrate your brand passion.

Some ideas around the how:

There is of course not a manual to describe how to bring out your passion. But it is easy to know what it is about -just think of how you feel when someone else expresses his passion (whether it is about cars, clothes, shoes, women, or food). What happens to the pitch of his voice, the glare in his eyes, the speed of his sentences, …  get the picture?

1st degree passion:

Show

Tell

Feel

>>ENTHUSIASM

2nd degree passion:

Buzz

Jump

Shout

>>ENERGY

3rd degree passion:

Bringing novelty

Breaking through the clutter

Reaching sr management

>> INSPIRATION

People with passion CAN change the world (dixit Steve Jobs):

BE PROUD, tell others the story of what your brand stands for. Convince them on why they should by. Let them F E E L the love you have for it, transmit that passion.

Net:

You’ll be out there, enjoying yourself. Guess what? others will enjoy you too. And guess what else? Brand passion works like a boomerang – not only does it rub off on others, it also will deepen your own relationship with the brand, making you better and stronger!

Demonstrating passion:

Not exactly business- or leadership- related but this kid shows passion in a super engaging way:
